The Hackney Empire was built in 1901 and was ahead of its time with electric lights, central heating and the in-built projection box. Chaplin and Stan Laurel each perfected their acts here before embarking on the big time.
The Hackney Empire continued to entertain between the two World Wars as a theatre but in 1956 it became the first commercial television studios in the UK. However, in 1986 it returned to it's original purpose and then in 2001 underwent a restoration project.
In it's 11th decade the Hackney Empire carries on providing entertainment to all.
