Tate Britain is the home of British art from 1500 to the present day and is a great place to take your children for an introduction to art. As the gallery web site states:You don't need to be an expert to look at or talk about art. And don't feel you have to `get it` to enjoy it, take whatever you like from a piece.
Audio tours and free daily guided tours are available and for younger children the gallery hosts a number of family events throughout the year. Check the website out for more details.

Is food available and what type?
Restaurant is available but is a little pricey. For young children you are better off taking your own food as there is plenty of space inside to picnic and a large green at the front overlooking the river if the weather is nice.
