The Spit is a new nature reserve at the mouth of the River Wandle.

Lying at the intersection of key riverside walks and cycleways along the Thames and the Wandle, it provides an ecological and recreational resource at the heart of Wandsworth's revitalised riverside quarter.

The SRB-funded £305k scheme is the result of a partnership between Wandsworth Challenge Partnership and Wandsworth Council. The site is a narrow promontory of land approximately 50m long by 20m wide at the confluence of the Wandle itself and Bell Lane Creek.

It previously had a number of industrial uses before being topsoiled and planted in the mid 1980s, only to become an inaccessible and inpenetrable thicket, of limited ecological interest except for three large white willows, which are retained within the new nature reserve.
The area's accessibility was transformed by the opening of a new east-west footbridge over the river, and in 2001 Wandsworth Challenge Partnership, on the basis of a W.S.Atkins feasibility report concerning the Wandle Delta, commissioned Wandsworth Council's Design Service and Jonathan Cook Landscape Architects to design and implement improvements to the site.
