Southwark Park

Gomm Road

go to website

Opened in 1869 as one of south London's first public parks.

Today the park offers large open spaces for walking and relaxing, as well as formal and wildlife gardens, a lake, a children's playground and a playroom.
For the more athletic visitors there are tennis courts, football pitches, an athletics track, informal games areas and a superb bowling green and clubhouse.

In 2001 the park underwent a major refurbishment with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A replica bandstand from the Great Exhibition was replaced during the refurbishment, and it is now used for a series of summer concerts.
At the 2002 opening of the refurbished park, a Golden Jubilee flower display welcomed their Royal Highnesses the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

The park's Victorian features and landscaping have been restored, and the park now offers enjoyment for everyone. The old visitor centre has been transformed into a new cafe. It offers a variety of freshly prepared food, hot and cold drinks and great smoothies during park opening hours. The Cafe Gallery features regular exhibitions.

The Friends of Southwark Park and Young Friends of Southwark Park meet every month and they welcome new members.
