Tavistock Square is a leafy, shaded and less busy open space than the nearby Russell Square.

The gardens include fine mature trees and shrubs around the border with lawns and flower beds in the centre. A number of memorial features can be found in Tavistock Square, some which promote peace.
There is the central statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a tree planted to commemorate the victims of the Hiroshima bombing and a Conscientious Objectors' memorial stone. In one corner is an impressive stone bench which commemorates Dame Lousia Aldrich-Blake, one of the first women surgeons.
