The Corporation of London has managed all of Hampstead Heath, apart from the Kenwood area, since 1989.It was acquired by the predecessors of the Corporation under various Acts of Parliament between 1871 and 1906. The Heath covers 791 acres within two London boroughs - Camden (681 acres) and Barnet (110 acres). This total includes the 112 acres at Kenwood which are maintained by English Heritage.

Over 10 million people visit Hampstead Heath each year. The reasons for their visits are many and varied. Sports facilities include an athletics track, tennis courts, a petanque pitch and a bowling green. Lifeguards oversee an outdoor swimming pool and three beautiful natural bathing ponds. The two bandstands stage music and entertainment in the summer months. There is a range of play facilities for children and even a zoo in Golders Hill Park. Many people find their own entertainment, enjoying the views and connecting with nature in a way that is hard to do anywhere else in London.
