Martins Hill

Church Road
go to website

Twelve and a half hectares of undulating open space with horticultural features.

The main entrance is in Martins Road and there are other entrances in Glassmill Lane and Queensmead Road. Martins Hill, is by long custom, a place of promenade for the townsfolk.
The Crystal Palace dominated the view from the hill in the 1800's. Threatened by planners to build houses here, the Local Board bought the land from the Church in 1878.
Trees were planted and flowerbeds laid out and it became the town's first ornamental park. Legend has it that the site was called Martin's Hill after the baker who lived on the hill.
