Islington Libraries are putting up the Big Top, clowning around and slapping on the face-paint for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge to keep children aged 4 – 11 reading throughout the school summer holidays.
This year’s theme is Circus Stars and the Challenge is simple. Children read six or more books, with each book helping the six circus characters progress from practice, then rehearsal to performance. Children collect rewards along the way and if they finish, get a medal, certificate and are entered for a prize draw for cinema tickets, iTunes vouchers or free tickets for events at the Stratford Circus. Sign up for free at the local library from July 4th! Parents can get a free DVD loan with every third book their child completes.
There’s also an interactive Circus Stars website – www.circus-stars. org.uk – that links to top authors and illustrators and gives children space to talk about favourite books and share reading ideas.
The Summer Reading Challenge, now in it’s 13th year, is always a popular and successful reading initiative. And it’s all free, which is showstopping news for parents! So mums, dads and carers, pop down to your local library to find out more or go to www.islington.gov.uk/libraries !
